Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
It’s important for our Azul patients to first know that CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss procedure. This is a body-contouring procedure. It is meant to target and remove stubborn pockets of fat that accumulate in certain areas on our bodies. These pockets are almost universally resistant to changes in diet and to exercise. At Azul Cosmetic Surgery we want our CoolSculpting patients generally to be within 10 percent of their ideal body weight. It is important that the patient has good elasticity in his or her skin so that it can tighten down over the new slimmer contour after the body has shed the destroyed fat cells.
COOLSCULPTING – BEFORE THE TREATMENT
Benefits of Fat Freezing
Getting rid of stubborn fat without any incisions, anesthesia, or downtime. Does that sound like a great benefit? Well, that’s exactly what CoolSculpting does. By freezing fat cells, yet leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed, CoolSculpting reduces fat in the treated areas by from 20-25 percent. And it kills these fat cells without the need for any downtime or recovery. This slims your contour permanently. Another benefit is how easy the treatments are. Our Azul patients read, watch videos, work on their laptops, or even take a nap during their sessions. How cool, excuse the pun, is that?

How CoolSculpting Works
At our practice, CoolSculpting is one of the most effective and popular innovations in recent years. The system is based on the principle that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other cells. Harvard researchers discovered that when they delivered cold energy to a fatty area, the skin and other tissues would be unharmed, while the fat cells would be damaged. The damaged cells would then slowly die off, and the body would naturally metabolize them.
The CoolSculpting system uses this science to its advantage by delivering intense cold to a targeted area of a patient’s body from the outside without any incisions. Patients can target their abdomens, flanks (“love handles”), hips, thighs, double chins, and backs to melt fat away. The best candidates for CoolSculpting are close to their goal weights but have some stubborn fat in these areas that they would like to reduce.
What areas can be treated with CoolSculpting?
Compared to other body slimming procedures, CoolSculpting has been approved by the FDA for many more areas of the body. These are the areas the FDA has cleared for treatment with CoolSculpting:
- Back fat
- Bra line fat
- Underneath the buttocks
- Double chin
- Upper arms
COOLSCULPTING – MARKING THE TREATED AREAS
You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for a CoolSculpting session which can be done at our Bonita Springs or Fort Myers locations. Treating a single area takes about an hour, so CoolSculpting is often referred to as a “lunchtime” procedure. During the treatment, Dr. Flaharty or a member of our team apply the CoolSculpting handpiece to the area you want to target. The device uses vacuum suction to pull a section of bulging, fatty tissue between cooling plates. Then you simply sit back and relax.
The treatments are very comfortable, with most patients likening the sensation to the numbing cold of an ice pack. Patients usually pass the time reading, using their laptops or tablets, or even napping.
COOLSCULPTING – WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT
COOLSCULPTING THE UPPER ABDOMEN
What does fat freezing feel like?
When we first place the cooling panels on the treatment area you’ll feel a pulling sensation as the panels apply light vacuum pressure to draw up the skin and underlying fat. Once the CoolSculpting device delivers its cooling you’ll feel an intense cooling sensation for a few minutes. This is cold, but patients say it is not painful. After a few minutes, the area becomes numb and you don’t feel anything for the remainder of the treatment.
COOLSCULPTING – HOW DOES IT FEEL?
CoolMini By CoolSculpting
A double chin is a common concern among both men and women. The CoolSculpting system includes a specialized applicator called the CoolMini™ with a unique design that fits snugly on smaller areas where patients want to reduce stubborn pockets of fat. Besides the neck, the CoolMini can freeze fat in the underarm areas and at the knees. The applicator uses the same CoolSculpting technology to eliminate fat and create a slim contour.
We also offer KYBELLA injectable treatments for a double chin. Dr. Flaharty can help you decide which nonsurgical treatment is best for you.
Is there recovery after a CoolSculpting session?
CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive. It’s not even necessary to apply topical numbing cream prior to your treatment. When we remove the cooling panels we massage the area for two or three minutes to get the blood back moving through the area and alleviate numbness, and then you’re free to get back your normal activities or work immediately.
WHAT TO EXPECT RIGHT AFTER COOLSCULPTING TREATMENT
Results of CoolSculpting
Immediately after treatment, your skin may be slightly red or tingly in the targeted area, but these effects fade within a few hours. You can return to your regular activities immediately.
Results will not be visible right away; they will develop over the course of 2 to 3 months, with some improvement continuing for up to 6 months as fat cells gradually die off and are naturally flushed away. Most patients see a fat reduction of about 20% to 25%, and a single treatment is all many people need.
Patients tend to be very excited as they watch their fat slowly melt away. Once the fat cells die, your body will not replace them with new ones. Your remaining fat cells can still expand, however, so it’s best to keep up a healthy lifestyle to maintain your results.
ANDREA’S COOLSCULPTING JOURNEY
Cost of a CoolSculpting Session
The cost of your CoolSculpting session varies depending on a few factors: how many areas you want to treat, whether you want to have DualSculpting using two units at once, and the individual size of the treatment areas. At Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, we match any printed price quote, so you know you will always get the best value with your CoolSculpting treatments. Once we know your goals and target areas, we can give you a clear idea of what your treatment will cost.
How many fat freezing sessions will I need?
There is no stock answer to this question. Some people feel satisfied losing 20-25 percent of the fat in just a single CoolSculpting treatment session. Others opt for a second or third session on the same area. Repeat treatments on the same area remove less fat than the initial 20-25 percent.
It’s not wise to rush into another session on the same area, as it takes some time for your results to show. The fat cells have been frozen and are dying, but it can take up to four months for the body to fully flush them away. Different people metabolize the fat at different speeds.
We’ll work with you before your first CoolSculpting session and give you an estimate if we think you’ll benefit from more than one treatment on a particular area.
The Brilliant Distinctions program makes it easy for you to save money on your favorite treatments. Each time you purchase an Allergan product — whether it’s BOTOX Cosmetic, Juvéderm, or CoolSculpting — you earn points that you can use to save on future treatments. It’s easy and free to join Brilliant Distinctions.
Side Effects of Freezing Fat
After the treatment there can be temporary redness, very slight swelling, tenderness, tingling, cramping, aching, itching, bruising, and possible skin sensitivity. All of these possibilities are minor and resolve themselves quickly. If you have CoolSculpting on your jowls, you can have a sensation of fullness in the back of the throat for a couple of hours after your treatment.
Is CoolSculpting Permanent?
CoolSculpting kills 20-25 percent of the fat cells in the treatment area. The body flushes them through the lymphatic system and they are gone for good. If you maintain a healthy weight and make exercise a part of your life, you’ll enjoy your results and slimmer contour for the rest of your life.
