Eyelid Surgery for Men

The eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that can correct heavy eyelids, wrinkles, loose skin, and dark circles and bags beneath the eyes. In recent years, more and more men have elected to undergo eyelid surgery. In fact, this procedure has become one of the most common cosmetic procedures among male patients. Though it is often performed to correct heaviness in the upper eyelid that can interfere with vision, men are increasingly choosing to undergo blepharoplasty for cosmetic purposes. Eyelid surgery is a quick procedure that can transform heavy, tired, sad-looking eyes into bright, brilliant, youthful-looking eyes.

The eyelid lift technique is similar for men and women; however, there are special considerations when it comes to male patients. Most men tend to have a strong brow and full eyelid, and it is important to preserve these uniquely male features to achieve the most natural-looking results. We have all seen the “overdone” eyelids in many of the male celebrities who have had too much surgery resulting in a hollow, gaunt, and aged appearance. This can be avoided with attention to detail and good technique.

Natural-looking results are the key for all cosmetic procedures, and eyelids are no different. The good news is that eyelid surgery has become less invasive for both men and women. We now recognize that much of facial aging results from the loss of fat causing deflation of the face. By preserving fat in eyelid surgery, we can reduce the risk of swelling and bruising while maintaining youthful fullness around the eyes. In fact, in addition to preserving fat, we also sometimes use a facial filler at the time of eyelid surgery to fill in dark circles and hollows commonly seen under the eyes.

What Is Male Blepharoplasty?

The blepharoplasty procedure is a popular plastic surgery that is developed around the patient’s facial anatomy to restore a more open, youthful appearance. Men have this form of surgical eyelid rejuvenation, also referred to as an eyelid lift, for many reasons. Those who do report that the results of their procedure enable them to look and feel younger and healthier, and to appear more alert and energetic. Male blepharoplasty is performed carefully with the necessary masculine shape and the thickness of a man’s skin in mind.

Are There Different Kinds of Eyelid Lift for Men?

There are two basic blepharoplasty procedures from which to choose. These include lower blepharoplasty and upper blepharoplasty.

Lower blepharoplasty focuses on the skin and fatty tissue that sits just under the eye. This area includes the tear troughs and transition to the contour of the upper cheek. The purpose of lower blepharoplasty is to eliminate the appearance of puffy, baggy lower eyelids, a problem that can occur as tissue loosens with age. From a hidden incision, the doctor removes or repositions fatty tissue to create smooth contouring. The skin is pulled to a precise degree of tightness and excess is trimmed before the small incision is closed.

Upper blepharoplasty is the cosmetic plastic surgery technique that restores more openness to the eyes and energy to the face overall. This procedure works by carefully measuring and tightening the upper eyelid skin that has become loose over time. There is very little fat, if any, in the upper eyelids, so this procedure focuses primarily on the skin.

Can Eyelid Surgery Remove My Dark Circles?

Dark circles can appear under the eyes for several reasons. While skin tone and genetics may play a role, the issue is the way in which light reflects off of the skin. When the eye sockets are hollow, even a slight decrease in fat beneath the lower eyelids can exacerbate darkness and shadowing. There are two ways in which dark circles may be approached. Depending on the amount of fat present under the eyes, a doctor may suggest filling out the area using an appropriate dermal filler product. Fat transfer may also be considered as a longer-lasting, completely natural filler treatment. Finally, blepharoplasty is also an option for treating dark circles. The results of this procedure may last indefinitely due to the precise repositioning of the fat pads that fill out the lower eyelid area.

How Does Upper Lid Blepharoplasty Differ for Men?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is not considered a complex procedure. However, it is very important for men to have an experienced, qualified plastic surgeon perform their upper eyelid lift. This is because the surgeon must take into consideration the unique facial anatomy and contours that support a masculine appearance. Without proper care in tightening and repositioning tissue, there is a risk of creating a more feminine contour in the upper eyelid.

How Does Lower Lid Blepharoplasty Differ for Men?

The lower eyelids do not play into the masculine or feminine appearance nearly as much as the upper eyelids do. To achieve outstanding results with lower blepharoplasty, the surgeon need only move or trim fatty tissue and tighten the skin.

How Long Is the Recovery from Eyelid Surgery?

The blepharoplasty procedure is quite conservative, which enables patients to return to normal activities relatively quickly after surgery. We advise patients to take at least one week off to allow their bodies to rest while healing is at its peak. There is typically very little post-operative discomfort after upper or lower blepharoplasty. However, bruising and swelling tend to be noticeable for the first several days of recovery. Each of these side effects diminishes significantly over 5 to 7 days, after which any lingering bruising may be covered with concealer. Yes, even men can apply this strategy. After 5 to 7 days, patients can return to work and light activities. After about 10 to 14 days, they may resume most normal activities, including exercise, provided they have been cleared by the doctor.

At all of our Southwest Florida practices, eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia with light intravenous sedation for maximum patient comfort. Blepharoplasty is often combined with other cosmetic procedures including endoscopic brow lift, facelift, neck liposuction, injectable facial fillers, chemical peels, and more.
