What is Blepharoplasty?
The eyelids are often the first parts of the face to show signs of aging. The thin, delicate skin around the eyes stretches and wrinkles faster than other areas of the face, creating a tired or worn-out appearance. Loose skin, protruding fat deposits, and deepening crow’s feet can also exacerbate this effect, making you look older than you feel. In severe cases, your eyesight may even be affected. Blepharoplasty, often called eyelid surgery, at our Naples, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers, FL practice eases these concerns for a natural-looking result that makes you look fresh and alert. Reverse Signs of Aging With Eyelid Surgery
These are great procedures because they address aging in the eyes. They can take a decade off a patient’s facial age. Eyelid surgery removes excess sagging skin on both the upper and lower eyelids. It repositions fat rather than removing it. This keeps the look natural, not hollow. Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla reposition fat in the lower eyelids and beneath to fill in under eye hollows as much as possible.
Eyelid Surgery Reviews
“I had eyelid surgery in my early 40’s I’ve never done anything to my face, so obviously you want perfection. Prayers answered. I had no pain, little swelling ( everyone will be different I’m sure) but my experience was wonderful. Clean straight stitches that are almost invisible. Caring and professional. I’m going back this year for a neck lift, I can only hope for the same great results.” September 2018
Who Is A Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Unlike many other aesthetic procedures, eyelid surgery is popular with both men and women. This is because sagging, aging eyelids occur in both sexes equally. More and more men are having this procedure in order to keep up with younger counterparts at the office. The reality is that most people over the age of 40 could benefit from this surgery with Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla. These are some typical characteristics of patients opting to have blepharoplasty:
- Droopy, baggy eyelids
- Puffy bags under the eyes
- Stretched, loose upper eyelid skin
- Hollowness above the cheeks and below the lower eyelids
- Sagging upper eyelids that begin to impede vision
Eyelid Surgery Consultation
Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla view consultations as a back and forth exchange of information. They are trying to discern why you want eyelid surgery and what goals you have for the procedure. They want to know what about your aging eyelids really bothers you. This is also the time for you to ask any and all questions you have about the procedure and about Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla. They can:
- Explain his focus only on facial plastic surgery
- Show you his before-and-after galleries with eyelid surgery
- Share with you the testimonial letters we receive
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
At Azul, eyelid surgery only requires local anesthesia and light, intravenous sedation for maximum safety and patient comfort. During surgery, with either Dr. Flaharty or Dr. Padilla, they will trim and tighten excess skin around the eyelids, sculpt or remove fat deposits when necessary, and fill hollows, such as those under the eyes. This results in a complete rejuvenation of the eyelids and the surrounding tissues. Eyelid surgery may be performed as an isolated procedure or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures including brow lift and face and neck lift. This comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation, which we call “harmonious facial rejuvenation,” typically yields superior and long-lasting results by rejuvenating the entire face in a single session.

Endoscopic Brow Lifts
An endoscopic brow lift (also called a forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that can be performed independently or as a part of an upper and lower eyelid lift, or even at the same time as a facelift. The purpose of a brow lift is to rejuvenate the forehead, erase horizontal or vertical wrinkles and lines, raise sagging skin, and give a more youthful and rested appearance.

Types of Eyelid Surgery
Many patients have both eyelids addressed with this eyelid surgery, but there are differences in the goals of surgeries on the upper and lower eyelids.
In upper eyelid surgery, Dr Flaharty and Dr. Padilla remove excess skin, fat, and muscle that are causing the sagging upper eyelids. On the upper eyelid, the goal is to remove any drooping. This makes the patient look more alert and refreshed.
In the lower eyelid, excess skin, fat, and muscle are removed or redistributed. Surgery on the lower eyelid also targets dark bags and circles beneath their eyes. These areas contribute to the patient looking perpetually tired.
How Is Recovery After Eyelid Surgery?
As with any facial surgery, the recovery following blepharoplasty can include some swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort. Regular cold compresses may be recommended to help reduce these effects for the first few days following surgery. Minor eye irritation, dryness, itching or burning may also occur during the initial healing process, but these effects are temporary. Dr. Flaharty or Dr. Padilla remove your sutures 1 week after surgery, and most visible bruising and swelling resolve themselves within 2 weeks.
Patients may resume the use of eye makeup and contact lenses after 1 week. Light activity, such as walking, is permissible after 2 days, but patients are advised to postpone strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to work in 1 week but may return as soon as they feel comfortable.
What Results Can I Expect from Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery is a safe, effective method for rejuvenating the eyelids. When you meet with Dr. Flaharty, or with Dr. Padilla, for a blepharoplasty consultation, they will evaluate your face as a whole to help you decide which procedures may provide you with the most favorable outcome. Because Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla aim for a harmonious, natural-looking result, they may suggest additional or alternative procedures to ensure the longest lasting results. Other treatments, such as facial fillers and micropeels may be added to eyelid surgery to further enhance the cosmetic result.
How Long Will My Blepharoplasty Results Last?
You can enjoy your enhanced eyelids for many years by keeping them protected from the sun with sunglasses and sunscreen. Over time, you may wish to use non-surgical treatments to maintain your results. Some people even opt to undergo an additional blepharoplasty, although this isn’t typically necessary for many years. The longevity of your results also depends on the severity of your symptoms before surgery. Dr. Flaharty and Dr. Padilla will help you understand what you can expect from your treatment.
Will My Blepharoplasty Scars Be Obvious?
No. During your surgery, Dr. Flaharty, and Dr. Padilla, take advantage of the natural contours of your eyelids to make very discreet incisions. In many cases, incisions are hidden within your upper eyelids’ natural creases or actually inside of your lower eyelids.

Can Eyelid Surgery Be Combined with Other Procedures?
Many of our Azul patients combine facelifts with eyelid surgery for more overall facial rejuvenation. Facelifts usually target the area from the cheeks down to the upper neck, so this combination would refresh everything from the eyes downward. Brow lifts are a good combination, as well. Brow lifts address the brows and the forehead, so they also make a good complementary procedure.
Risks of Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery with Dr. Flaharty and with Dr. Padilla is a very safe, satisfying procedure, but it still is surgery. There is the possibility of excessive bleeding, infection, and poor incision healing, just as with any surgery.
Complications specific to eyelid surgery are:
- Inability to fully close the eyelid
- Eyelid infection
- Double vision
- Noticeable scarring
- Malpositioned eyelids
- Numbness of the eyelids
