Understanding Ultherapy – What to expect during your treatment

A facelift without surgery, downtime or the stigmas of a facelift procedure? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well here at Azul, it’s not! Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure for skin tightening to lift the eyebrow, neck, jawline and décolletage areas. In fact, Ultherapy is the only non-surgical device with FDA approval for skin-tightening.

Ultherapy uses ultrasound, not laser, to deliver focused energy beneath the skin to the deeper suspensory layers of the face and neck. This triggers your body’s natural healing response, resulting in new collagen production and subsequent tightening and lifting effect on surrounding facial tissues.

Understanding Ultherapy

To properly understand how Ultherapy works, let’s first help you to understand the role that collagen plays in creating youthful skin and subcutaneous tissues. Once we reach the age of 30, our bodies start to lose about one percent of our collagen every year. As collagen production slows, our skin loses elasticity and starts to look crepey – sagging and wrinkling. Ultherapy stimulates collagen growth by delivering energy through the skin to the chosen depth of focus. Several passes can be made over an area at different depths, triggering a multifocal healing response, which stimulates new collagen production and tightens the tissue at multiple levels.

One of the unique characteristics of Ultherapy is that the high-frequency sound waves can be directed deep beneath the skin to target deep suspensory layers of the face called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, or SMAS for short. The SMAS layer is the main suspensory layer of the face that is tightened and lifted during face and neck lift surgery. With Ultherapy, the focused ultrasound is delivered to the SMAS layer in rows, which creates an instant tightening and triggers the production of new collagen. Results continue to improve over three to six months because Ultherapy sets a regenerative process into motion, subtly rejuvenating your face and neck from the inside out.

The Ultherapy Procedure

Now that you understand how Ultherapy works, let’s dive a little deeper into the procedure itself. The first step for an Ultherapy treatment is that your skin will be thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup or impurities. We then begin the treatment. The hand piece from the Ultherapy machine is placed in contact with the skin and the ultrasound energy is emitted. Ultrasound energy is emitted across the entire treatment area, sometimes in several passes at different depths. The procedure for a single area, like your usually takes a little over an hour.

In the past Ultherapy was known to be uncomfortable for longer procedures. Good news, is that Azul solved that issue by using ProNox, a laughing gas, with all our Ultherapy patients. Now patients can lay comfortably for even the longest treatments – and still drive themselves home a few minutes later. ProNox may relax you enough to make you want to doze off, but within 10 minutes of completion, you will be alert and ready to take on the rest of the day. And since all the Ultrasound energy is delivered into the deeper tissues, the skin surface looks the same as when you walked in – so you can easily go about your day. Additionally, there are no special post-procedure measures you need to take.
