Freshen Up Your Skincare for Summer
- Posted on: Jul 2 2018
Are you ready for some fun in the sun this summer?
If you visit any beach in Florida this time of year, you’re likely to see hundreds of bodies scattered over the sand, soaking up the sun’s rays to get a perfect tan. Although the summertime may seem like the perfect season to lay out in the sun, this can actually be very dangerous to your overall skin health.
Sun damage is easily the most common way we damage our skin. We see it all the time here at Azul, and it’s potentially worse than other places, because we live in Florida and get sun exposure almost every day. Years’ worth of tans and improper sun protection can lead to thick, wrinkled skin, making you appear much older than you actually are. Although there are some procedures that can help with sun-damaged skin, like Intense Pulsed Light, or Fractional Laser Resurfacing, it’s better to simply avoid the damage altogether. By the way, we are not just talking about damage from the sun itself, here. Tanning beds are just as dangerous, if not more so.
If you really want bronze skin this summer, using a spray tanning service, a bronzer or a sunless tanner is your best and healthiest bet. These “tans” are obviously much safer than sun tans, and can also give you much better, more consistent coverage. Just think, no tan lines! Or you could simply embrace your skin’s natural tone. If you have pale skin, you shouldn’t hide it! And years in the future, you might look back and be thankful that you used proper sun protection and kept your skin healthy and youthful.
Living in Florida, sun protection is critical. It constantly surprises us how many folks, without a second thought, go out into the hot summer sun with no sunscreen. They are not just risking a short-term sunburn, but they could also be risking their long-term skin health.
However, we do understand why some are reluctant to slap on a basic drugstore sunscreen. They can be greasy on the skin, give you a shiny appearance, and can ruin your makeup. Frankly, they can be gross. For sun protection that not only works, but also feels fantastic on the skin while providing a host of other benefits, Azul SkinHealth’s Sun Protection products are ideal for the summer season.
All of our sun protection products are broad-spectrum, protecting you from UVA and UVB rays. Our Satin Eclipse Sunscreen (SPF 32) and is a super-protective tinted sunscreen and hydrating skin primer, all in one. It also contains antioxidant vitamins C and E that will help both protect and repair your skin all day long. Satin Eclipse also blocks infrared light and is great for all skin types especially oily skin.
Our Ultra Natural Sunscreen (SPF 30) contains all-natural ingredients, like zinc oxide, titanium, lingonberry stem cells and aloe. These ingredients help keep your skin healthy, while also protecting against infrared and UVA/UVB and infrared light. It’s super gentle on the skin, and is perfect for all skin types!
When you are out in the sun, you should reapply your sun protection approximately every two hours. If you need to refresh your UVA/UVB sun protection when you are out and about, our Mineral Defense Sunscreen (SPF 32) is a powder and comes with its own built-in, self-dispensing brush. It’s super lightweight and goes on dry, using tiny micro-particles of zinc and titanium to form a protective barrier between your skin and the sun. Also containing antioxidants, including niacinamide and vitamin C, it calms inflammation, inhibits irregular skin pigmentation, boosts collagen production, and repairs fine lines. Plus, its small size means you can toss it right into your purse or gym bag!
Don’t forget that your lips should also be protected from the sun. Be sure to always carry a lip balm that includes SPF protection. (Trilogy Labs is developing one for us right now and we should have available soon!)
Heavy makeup in the summertime can be detrimental to your skin’s appearance. We all sweat, and makeup can often clog your pores, causing acne, blackheads and other blemishes. When you are in the heat of summer, you need to allow your skin to breathe by using our Minerale Makeup.
Not only are Azul SkinHealth Minerale Makeup products non-comedogenic, they are also fully complementary with all of our sun protection products. You can safely apply our Satin Eclipse, Ultra Natural or Mineral Defense sunscreens right over top of your Minerale Makeup! And here’s a plus, they also have an SPF of 20 on their own.
One of the biggest challenges of the summertime is keeping your skin moisturized. That hot summer sun can dry you out fast. However, the obvious solution (using lots of moisturizer) isn’t necessarily the best way to deal with this issue. Too much moisturizer can feel heavy and clammy on your skin and add to moisture from sweat making your pores clogged. It’s better to use a lightweight moisturizer that can deliver moisture without harmful effects. We recommend trying our Green Tea Moisturizer, or for oily skin our HA Serum with Peptides. If you find moisturizer to be too heavy in the summer, try a tinted sunscreen with a moisturizing component, the Mineral Defense Sunscreen is a perfect summer alternative.
Another way to keep moisturized during the summer is to make sure that your body is getting the water that it needs. Keeping hydrated from the inside is key to your skin health throughout the summer (and let’s be honest, through the entire year). Some say that you should drink up to 12 glasses of water a day, so try carrying a marked water bottle with you at all times to keep track of how much you’ve had. If you are properly hydrated, then your skin will also be getting the moisture it so desperately needs.
Freshening up your skincare routine for the summer is easy! You just need the right products to protect your skin and keep you looking healthy and youthful, whether you are in the sun or not. There are also a number of skin-rejuvenating treatments that we offer at our Medical Spa to help repair sun damage or signs of aging, plus the rejuvenating surgical and non-surgical treatments that we offer as well.
