Dr. Flaharty’s Under-Eye Miracle Treatment

Do you want to know one of the best feelings an aesthetics professional can have? It’s when someone says to you, “Wow, I can’t believe how good I look! It’s like a miracle!”

Now, although we strive for excellence here at Azul (and, I believe, we always do!), hearing that someone feels like their results are miracle-worthy can be kind of rare. It requires a combination of a truly remarkable treatment with a truly remarkable doctor. And, here at Azul, we have both. I’m talking about Dr. Flaharty’s Under-Eye Miracle Treatment! This is a type of dermal filler treatment that is specifically designed to treat bags under the eyes, wrinkles and deep tear troughs. Although similar to other dermal fillers, in the sense that a filler will be used to replace the natural fat loss in the face, it’s very different in the way that the filler is administered.

So, What Are Dermal Fillers?

Some of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures we offer here at Azul are dermal fillers. Our master injectors (including myself) inject a naturally derived gel-like substance into specific areas of the face to restore volume lost due to age. As we get older, we start to lose fat in our face. This layer of fat is what gives our faces volume and roundness. Once it’s gone, our faces can look much sharper and more severe. In other words, we look much older.

Dermal fillers can fix this by literally filling in these areas, like under the eyes. Although we use many different dermal fillers, depending on the exact areas we are going to treat, they are all very safe and bioabsorbable. The downside is that, because your body will absorb and break down the fillers over time, patients need to come back into Azul for maintenance treatments. The procedure is, thankfully, very short (about a half-hour), but the refreshes can still be annoying. But, that’s just been the reality of dermal fillers. Until now…

What’s the Miracle?

Three parts make up the “miracle.” Part one is the area that is being treated.

The tear trough (sometimes called the nasojugal groove) is the skin that extends from your inner eye to its outer corner. You know those dark bags that can appear under your eyes when you are super-tired? That’s what we’re talking about. As we age, the loss of fat here can make these areas appear much darker and puffier, making you look years older. Although eyelid surgery can be used to correct these areas, we can also use a particular dermal filler to improve its appearance.

Part two of the miracle is the Belotero filler. Just like some other fillers, Belotero is made from hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is entirely safe. Dr. Flaharty prefers to use Belotero in the tear troughs because it is less hydrophilic than other HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers. Thus patients do not get the puffiness that may occur with other injectables and other providers. Additionally, when used to fill the area under the eyes, results can last much longer than with other fillers. Dr. Flaharty has had some patients whose results lasted from 8 to 10 years!

The third part of the miracle is Dr. Flaharty himself. For this type of dermal filler, he uses a unique and highly specialized procedure that many plastic surgeons won’t do, because of the amount of training that it requires. Rather than inject the filler under the eyes with a needle, he uses a special tiny cannula, resulting in much less bruising in the area, and a much faster recovery. This isn’t the kind of procedure that you want to do with just any cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Flaharty is a master at it, and will give you instant results that will absolutely blow you away.

Dr. Flaharty likes to combine this filler with a TCA Peel. This particular type of chemical peel will significantly tighten up the skin under the eyes (along with everywhere else on your face – it’s a great peel). As with the fillers, your results will be instant. Your skin might be a little red and sensitive for a few days afterward, somewhat like having a sunburn, but there is no lengthy recovery period associated with it.

Many patients come into Azul looking for dermal fillers, often in combination with BOTOX for a Liquid Facelift. They know the power of fillers, but even they couldn’t suspect the miracle that is this treatment. Dr. Flaharty is one of the only cosmetic surgeons who performs it, and for a good reason. It requires an experienced and knowledgeable hand, but the under-eye results speak for themselves.
