5 Facts About How Botox & Fillers Can Help Erase Years from Your Face

by Lisa Gorman

Botox treatment

When people come into Azul asking for facial rejuvenation, they’re often confused about the difference between Botox Cosmetic and dermal fillers. Many think the two treatments are interchangeable.

Both treatments are extremely popular procedures designed to minimize and erase small wrinkles on the face, and both treatments are injected… so, what’s the difference?

Choose either Botox or dermal fillers based on the kind of wrinkles (yes, there are different kinds!) that you want treated, and the area of the face where they’re located.

1.Use Botox for Dynamic Facial Wrinkles

Botox is designed to treat small wrinkles and fine lines that are usually caused by repetitive muscle movement, like those at the eyes and forehead. Crow’s feet and forehead furrows are perfect for Botox treatment. These wrinkles are created because of tiny muscles under the skin. Small, repetitive (and mostly unconscious) movements of these muscles cause these kinds of wrinkles to appear.

By injecting Botox into the repetitive muscle sites, the tiny muscles are temporarily paralyzed. As they relax, the lines and wrinkles caused by these repetitive actions start to soften and disappear.

Botox is usually considered the best treatment for the fine wrinkles that appear on the top half of the face.

2. Dermal Fillers Are Best for Static Wrinkles

Static wrinkles are those creases that are simply caused by the wear and tear of time. As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin starts to drop off, causing our skin to become looser as it loses volume. This directly contributes to the formation of wrinkles; especially laugh lines and sunken cheeks.

Dermal fillers are perfect to treat these kinds of embedded wrinkles. Instead of freezing the muscles like Botox, injecting a dermal filler is kind of like using sculpting clay to fill in the wrinkles.

Generally, dermal fillers are considered to be better for treating wrinkles on the lower half of the face.

3. Combine the Two for Best Results

Since Botox is best for the top half of the face and dermal fillers are best for the lower half, we can combine these two treatments, relaxing or filling in years’ worth of wrinkles and fine lines. With the use of dermal fillers, we can also help soften your features and restore volume lost due to age.

In concert, Botox and dermal fillers can take years off your appearance without the need for any additional cosmetic surgical procedures.

4. Both Are All-Natural

Some people get nervous about injecting substances into their face, and understandably so. But it may help to know that both Botox and dermal fillers are completely natural. Botox is simply a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. It sounds scary, but in reality, it’s safe and harmless in the tiny doses used for the treatment. It’s been studied for years, and the minuscule amount that we inject only weakens specific muscles and causes no lasting effects.

There are a number of different dermal fillers, such as Artefill®, Restylane® and Juvéderm®, but all are made with active ingredients that occur naturally in the body. These substances are completely safe, and your body will slowly reabsorb them over time.

5. Lasting Results?

Although both Botox and dermal fillers can be remarkably effective treatments for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles, neither one of them is a permanent solution. Over the course of about three to four months after a Botox treatment, your tiny muscles will regain their strength and those fine lines will start to reappear. Dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type used and how quickly your body absorbs them. Thankfully, both treatments are so safe that you can come into the practice for periodic touch ups as needed.

Botox Cosmetic and dermal fillers are just two of the age-defying treatments that we offer.
