Over time, the elastin and collagen in the skin break down, resulting in facial wrinkles and folds. These can be further compounded by such factors as UV exposure, repetitive facial movements, and heredity. While there are a variety of injectable fillers available to treat the signs of facial aging, results have, until now, only been temporary. Artefill is the first and only permanent, non-resorbable injectable filler which is FDA-approved for the treatment of smile lines, or nasolabial folds. This filler is dual-acting, meaning that it provides both immediate and long-lasting wrinkle correction. Artefill first visibly corrects the wrinkles, and its microspheres provide the permanent support needed for lasting wrinkle correction.

Artefill is comprised of PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) microspheres and purified bovine collagen gel. It also contains an anesthetic to ensure comfort during the injection. However, since it is not a natural substance, there is a risk of allergic reaction. Prior to treatment, a skin test will need to be administered to check for an allergy to bovine collagen. Artefill should not be administered to patients with an allergy to lidocaine or bovine collagen products.
Dr. Flaharty administers Artefill at our Fort Myers and Bonita Springs offices as a simple, outpatient procedure that takes less than an hour to complete or often as a compliment to a facelift procedure during surgery. Because the results are considered to be permanent, Dr. Flaharty generally prefers to "under-fill" on the first treatment, adding more at a subsequent appointment, if needed. For most patients, 1 or 2 treatments are typically all that are required.
During treatment, a fine needle is used to inject the filler directly beneath the skin. Results are immediate, and no downtime is needed. Generally, full results are seen within 6 months of the procedure. As with any injectable, some minor swelling and redness may occur at the injection site, though these typically fade within 24 hours. You can resume work and other normal activities immediately after your Artefill treatment.
