About Us - Patrick M. Flaharty M.D., FAACS

Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to smooth the facial skin and fine wrinkles. This procedure uses laser energy to treat layers of damaged skin, revealing smoother, more youthful-looking new skin. Facial lines, uneven pigmentation and facial scars can be improved. Some patients have specific areas of the face treated while others opt to treat the entire face.

Laser resurfacing is often performed with local anesthesia and sedation. During treatment, the activated laser is passed back and forth over the skin until the damaged skin is improved. Depending on the size and number of treatment areas, procedural times may last anywhere from several minutes to an hour.

Mild discomfort and swelling may result after the laser skin resurfacing procedure. Medication can help to control discomfort, while ice packs can be applied to minimize swelling. Bandages may be applied after treatment and these will be removed within one week. The treated skin will develop crusts which will fade after approximately ten days. The skin may appear pink or red for anywhere from several weeks to six months. Most patients find that they are recovered enough following their laser resurfacing procedure to return to work and other normal activities after two weeks. You will need to delay more strenuous activities for four to six weeks, and the skin will need to be protected from the sun for six to twelve months.

Dr. Flaharty specializes in facial cosmetic surgery. He is board certified and has extensive training and experience in all facial cosmetic surgery procedures. The doctor has offices in Fort Myers and Bonita Springs, Florida.
