The eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which can correct sagging eyelids and bags beneath the eyes. The surgery removes excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids, improving signs of aging and puffiness. The result is a refreshed and more youthful appearance to the eye area.
In recent years, more and more men have been electing to undergo eyelid surgery. In fact, this procedure has become one of the most common cosmetic procedures among male patients. Though it is often performed to correct heaviness in the upper eyelid which interferes with vision, men are increasingly choosing to undergo blepharoplasty for purely cosmetic purposes.
The eyelid lift technique is the same in men as for women. However, there are special considerations when it comes to male patients. Most men are seeking a very natural, masculine result, and a conservative approach is often required to keep from creating too obvious of a change in the appearance. In fact, many men will keep some fine eyelid wrinkling as this often adds distinction to the male appearance. As a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Flaharty has extensive experience with male patients and providing them with natural, long-lasting blepharoplasty results. He is happy to meet with you for a consultation at his Fort Myers or Bonita Springs, Florida location.
The eyelid lift is often performed under local anesthesia. When combined with other procedures, such as a facelift, general anesthesia may be used instead. Dr. Flaharty places the incisions in very well-concealed locations to allow for minimal visible scarring, such as in the natural creases of the upper eyelids or along the lower lash line of the lower eyelids. Working through this incision, Dr. Flaharty will remove excess fat, sagging skin and muscle. For patients with just a pocket of fat beneath the lower eyelids and no excess skin, a less invasive transconjunctival blepharoplasty can be performed in which the incision is made on the inside of the lower lid. Surgical times average one to three hours.
Some bruising and swelling may occur around the eye area. This will clear up within about two weeks and can be minimized by elevating the head and applying cold compresses. Scars will fade within about two months. You should feel well enough to return to work and other public engagements within seven to ten days, though you will need to hold off on strenuous activities and exercise for approximately three weeks.
